Superliga Day One

The MLS vs Mexican League "Superliga" began tonight. Flipping through channels looking for sports, I caught some of the second half of Morelia vs. Chicago Fire. Disgusting display of incompetence by Chicago. The score was 4-1 for Morelia when I turned it on, and just as I was thinking that must be an aggregate score, Las Monarcas scored again to make the final score 5-1. Rather pathetic showing by Chicago.

Some guy named Rafael Marquez scored for Morelia. Could it be...nope. Not THAT Rafael Marquez. This one is a forward named Rafael Marquez Lugo. He came on as a halftime sub. In fact, not a single one of the players on Morelia is a National Team player for any nation, as far as I can tell. Nor for Chicago, but Brian McBride did play the whole game as lone forward in a 4-5-1.

At least the New England Revolution beat UNAM Pumas and Philadelphia Union beat Glasgow Celtic in a friendly, both by 1-0 scores. Don't get too excited about the latter win. The goal scorer for Philly against Celtic is French, Sebastien Le Toux.

Houston plays Pachuca and Chivas USA plays Puebla tomorrow. There will be a pair of United States National Team players in action in the first game....for Pachuca. Jose Francisco Torres and Herculez Gomez are both with Pachuca. There will be more USMNT players for Pachuca than the four MLS squads combined (one: Jonathan Bornstein, Chivas USA).

Oh, wait, does Brian Ching count as a USMNT player? I forget.....
