US Roster Announced for Brazil Friendly

USSF announced our lineup versus Brazil:

GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton)
DEFENDERS (6): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Étienne), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht)
FORWARDS (3): Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Pachuca)

A few things strike me with the US announcement of this roster.

One, other than Jermaine Jones*, there isn't a single person that wasn't called into camp for the World Cup. Granted, Jones has looked decent in his few preseason games, but this lineup will tell us absolutely nothing about our possible team moving forward.

I understand there is possibly reluctance for the USMNT to call in college players during their season, but with Brazil more than willing to call up young players to establish a future basis, there is an inherent problem to be seen.

We're trying to win this without making it look like we are bringing our full squad. Yeah, we're missing Dempsey, Davies and Altidore. Altidore is trying to get into the squad with Villareal, or baring that getting into someone's starting XI. Davies still isn't fully fit (he's playing 80-90mins at a time with the reserves but only coming off the bench for the senior squad). Dempsey will be beginning a tough EPL season. We're missing a couple others as well, like Gooch, but admittedly, Gooch has to try to squeeze into AC Milan's squad so he has more important things than this to do.

The problem with this approach is that we will keep it close, but if we are to truly test a young squad and let our future players grow, throw them in the deep end. Youth against youth. Guzan should start, maybe Jones to give him a taste of the US team, but seriously, do we have no young defenders to work into the squad? And up top, all we are doing is throwing speed at the Brazilians.

Honestly, it looks like we are going to have to wait until December before we start trying to break our youth into the senior squad, or we are doomed to repeat the same problems of the last 4 years. Maybe this is a harbinger of what to expect from the USSF for the future, and if so, be prepared to be disappointed for 4 more years.

Gametime is 8pm EST at the Meadowlands on August 10th. It'll be on ESPN2, Univision and ESPN Deportes.

* The guys over at Matchfitusa.com dropped the news that Jones is out as is Chad Marshall. Altidore and Omar Gonzalez are set to replace them.

  1. Starting lineup is our full strength squad for the most part. Guys like Dempsey are missing, but that will give us a good chance to see Jermaine Jones at long last, against some decent competition. For that reason he should play alongside our regular starting lineup.

Either Feilhaber or Edu will have to take Dempsey’s spot on the wing. As much as I prefer Edu, I think we need to see Feilhaber start there. And Edu is the starter at defensive mid until Jones proves himself, but since this is a friendly, here is his chance.

In addition, although Cherundolo is the starter in games that are meaningful, he is old and it is time to take a long look at Spector at right back. If he screws up, at least we know. Glad to have a 90 minute look at Goodson.

At forward, time to see if Findley can do anything. I will bet any amount of money that he will run around really fast but not get any shots on target. He should be replaced by Buddle at halftime, to give Buddle a chance to suck, too. But maybe Buddle will do well.

    GK – Howard
Def – Bornstein, Boca, Goodson, Spector
Mid – Bradley, Jones, Feilhaber, Donovan
    Fwd – Findley, Gomez

  2. Old Coach has:
A thank you: for posting upcoming matches like this or the CONCACAF champions league. If not for your postings, I probably would miss them.
A question: Does Bradley pick the roster for friendlies like this? If yes,
An observation: The only reason to fill the roster with older, (? but proven) players is to go for the victory, as opposed to the long term good--player development for future success. Therefore, one has to wonder if Bradley is trying to beef up his resume` for future employment opportunities, or just to hold on to his current job. Seems like desperation, as I do not think Bradley is very insecure.

  3. Me again. Jermaine Jones is out.

Put Maurice Edu in the starting lineup and don't look back. Jozy Altidore is also named to the squad, so Findley does not get the start.

Finally, Chad Marshall is out (he would not have played anyway) and the Big Man from the LA Galaxy, Omar Gonzalez, is in at center back.
