R.I.P. Dennis Marshall 1985-2011

The Costa Rica Federation announced on Thursday that defender Dennis Marshall, who plays for Danish club Aalborg BK, died following a car crash on the Braulio Carillo highway near San Jose, Costa Rica. Marshall, 25 years old, had scored the tying goal for Costa Rica in their quarterfinal match against Honduras on a header from a corner kick, sending the game into a penalty kick shootout, five days before the fatal accident. It was his first ever goal for the Costa Rican senior national team.

Marshall had emerged as a consistent starter for Los Ticos and also for Aalborg, where he was teammates with Americans Chris Rolfe and Marcus Tracy. Marshall's girlfriend, Meilyn Masis Castro, was also killed in the accident. I'm thinking to myself (but I'm not saying it out loud) that if Alvaro Saborio could have made his penalty kick late in regulation against Honduras, Costa Rica would have been playing on Wednesday and Dennis Marshall might still be with us today. Oh, wait, did I write that? I guess I did.
