Friendly: Italy v USMNT Highlights

Where is that quality win they asked... Klinsmann hadn't won a big time game yet.

Then Wednesday happened.

Dempsey, the leading US goalscorer in Europe, put one past Buffon, and the US runs away with a 1-0 win at Italy.

78 years.

11 games.

1st win in all that time over Italy.

More importantly, a big win for the US, for Klinsi, and just in case your friends say that Italy was "missing players", tell them this:

US was without captain Landycakes. The US was outshot 19 (7 SOG) to 4 (2 SOG) and only possessed the ball for 1/3 of the match, in Italy, in Ferarris Stadium, where the Italians have never lost with a lineup including Buffon, Motta, De Rossi and Pirlo while the US started Goodson at CB. The US also subbed in Eddie Johnson and Terrance Boyd late in the game... EJ... and Boyd...

Yeah, Italy pretty much bit the big one on this match. Best 2 of 3?

  1. 1:15 - Brek Shea with the big defensive play, let us not forget he is U-23, and the U-23's beat Mexico 2-0 yesterday without him and Terrence Boyd. (U-23 Goals by Juan Agudelo and Mix Diskerud).

2:10 - that's Fabian Johnson playing the ball to Jozy. Nice, do we actually have a decent left back? Good use of the body by Jozy to shield the ball from the defenders, even better effort by Dempsey to get open.

There is a stupid article in ESPN Magazine suggesting that Dempsey scores a lot of goals but takes a lot of shots and scores a low percentage of his many shots. Their stupid analysis does not consider that the reason he takes so many shots is because he gets open a lot. A goal scorer creates his own space.

And before anyone says we only won because Tim Howard was the man, I say just one word: Buffon.

Most consider him to be better than Howard. I'd hardly say we have an advantage at goalkeeper although Tim Howard was flawless yesterday.
