Rematch: Santos Laguna vs Monterrey

Sorry it has been a while, but I have big news today. Yesterday and today were the second legs of the Mexico Torneo Clausura semifinals, between Monterrey and Club America (yesterday) and Santos Laguna and UNL Tigres today. The matchup for the final will be interesting, given the events of recent weeks.

Torneo Apertura winners UNL Tigres had a substantial 3-1 aggregate lead over Santos Laguna upon taking a 2-0 lead in today's semifinal second leg, until Santos forward Oribe Peralta (pictured) scored in the 86th minute and then again in the 89th minute to unexpectedly tie the match 3-3. Santos Laguna owned the tiebreaker of the better regular season record, so they advance to the finals to face Monterrey, who defeated Club America 2-0 aggregate by winning 2-0 yesterday at home.

This is an interesting matchup because just two short weeks ago, Monterrey defeated Santos Laguna in the Concacaf Champions League final. Monterrey won the first match at home 2-0, with two goals from Chilean superstar Humberto Suazo, then lost 2-1 in the second leg at Torreon to win 3-2 aggregate. And, Oribe Peralta (pictured) of Santos won the CCL Golden Ball. On Thursday, May 17, Santos Laguna will host the first leg of the Gran Final Clausura, and then on Sunday May 20, Monterrey will host the second leg.

One last important result from Mexico yesterday: Five time Mexican champion Leon won the Liga de Ascenso and will return to the Liga Primera again, after being relegated in 2002. Leon were the first team to win the League and Mexico Cup in the same year, 1949.
