Friendly: Guatemala v USMNT Highlights

With a roster full of MLS'ers, we weren't expecting a whole bunch.

At the end of the 1st half, with a goal by Gomez, our feelings were still mixed.

Even the Professor was chiming in every ten minutes to my email:

Not sure if you have NBC Sports channel. If you don't, you aren't watching the warmup match for the Gold Cup, Guatemala vs USA. The return of Landon Donovan after nearly a year (last appearance for the USA was August 2012). Also Gooch is starting and should earn his way back into the USA squad if he plays well. It is halftime now. USA leads 1-0 on a goal by Herculez Gomez, set up on a lofted through ball from Jose Torres, who I'd say is our best player so far.
Lineup is a 4-2-3-1
GK: Rimando
DL: Beasley
DC: Goodson
DC: Onyewu
DR: Parkhurst
DMC: Torres
DMC: Beckerman
OML: Castillo
OMC: Donovan
OMR: Corona
F: Gomez
Rimando will be goalie for all Gold Cup games. Goodson and Gooch aren't really being challenged by Guatemala, but that's because Jose Torres is shutting down every attack. Castillo doesn't look very good except that Beasley is attacking up the left and Castillo is a left back for Club Tijuana, so he can cover. I don't exactly see Michael Parkhurst making those runs up the right wing. Joe Corona is not that good on right wing but he did draw the defense away from Herculez on the goal. 42nd minute: Beasley had the ball on the left wing, found Torres about 25 yards out. Gomez made a run but Corona also made a run and the defender couldn't stick with Herculez because Corona would have been wide open. Torres lifted the ball from outside the 18 to inside the penalty spot, where Herculez volleyed it out of the air into the goal. 1-0 at halftime.
Stuart Holden is warming up at halftime. I predict that he will replace Joe Corona at OMR, who isn't playing so well. Beckerman also has no talent whatsoever and should be replaced, too.
Then this happens... Landycakes gets the PK.

Oh, this is (sic) hilarious. They mentioned before the game that Landon was stuck on 49 international goals. So, in the 55th minute, he draws a penalty kick for getting shoved down right in front of the goal, less than a minute after being denied a call for a Guatemala handball in the box. So, fitting that Mr. Cheap Goal gets his 50th on a penalty. 2-0 USA. I vaguely seem to recall that he passed Eric Wynalda as the USA's all time leading goal scorer also with a penalty kick goal.
Stuart Holden has been our best player in the 2nd half. He ripped a shot just wide of goal with his first touch. Being a friendly, we have more subs, and I like them: Chris Wondolowski for Herculez Gomez at lone forward, Brek Shea for Edgar Castillo at left wing, and Alejandro Bedoya for Joe Corona at right wing. Immediately, Stuart Holden sent a ball across the face of the goal that Brek Shea had a chance to race onto for an easy goal, but Shea didn't get there on time. Still, it is incredible to me that Brek Shea doesn't start at OML for us. He plays in the EPL! He's got to be better than Edgar Castillo. I don't know why he doesn't play in the qualifiers. I'd also like to see Stuart Holden start alongside Michael Bradley for the World Cup squad instead of Jermaine Jones.

This quickly became a rout.  6-0...  Not sure we were as good as the scoreline states, but also not going to argue with the result.
